The lyrical moon

In September 2016, the Atmosphere China Design Invitational Exhibition opened, with each exhibited work conveying the designer’s unique understanding of Chinese culture.

In the hearts of every Chinese person flows a unique aesthetic and cultural blood formed from a blend of different ideologies from the East. This exhibition showcased the differences and commonalities, presenting the philosophical forms of China in a visual and communicative manner. It was a dialogue between tradition and innovation.

The “moon” holds a significant position in traditional Chinese culture, being an essential element in literature, aesthetics, and philosophy. Leveraging the theme of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the exhibition poster focused on the “moon” and highlighted this cultural symbol. The Mid-Autumn Festival is considered a festival of “reunion” and “goodness.” However, for young people who are “strangers” and wanderers, there is often a complex sense of melancholy and confusion in their lives. Pressures, yearning, and resilience accompany their youth. On such a festival, the moon, for them, is a silent spiritual companion, illuminating “here” and “there,” connecting home and the distant.

“城里的月光把梦照亮,请守护它身旁”

《城里的月光》 陈佳明

“月亮高高挂在了天上,为回家的人照着亮”

《月光》 邢天溯

“但愿人长久,千里共婵娟”

《水调歌头》 苏轼

This poster dynamically depicts the connections and alternations between people, life, and the moon, conveying the idea that life often has its challenges. Some negative attitudes gradually emerge under the solitary night, becoming prominent; however, after calming down, they also slowly recede.

In the picture, various helplessness and complexities of life are subtly revealed, appearing particularly vivid in the darkness. In the emerging moon, ancient and contemporary words are visible, representing the literary expressions of native Chinese and overseas Chinese. These wishes and beautiful aspirations, as they complete themselves, are erasing unpleasant vocabulary and taking away negative attitudes.

Negative vocabulary in the background uses the same font and brightness, indicating that all things unpleasant make people equally upset and are constantly recalled. The statements in the moon, however, use different artistic techniques to convey their individual emotional states. Different attitudes can all help smooth away unhappiness.
