Tattoo, originally written as “文身” in Chinese, is also known as “刺青” (Cìqīng). For a long time, tattoos have been considered an expression of rebellion, decadence, and the edge by mainstream consciousness. Some religions explicitly oppose tattooing, as stated in Leviticus 19:28: “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves.”
Movies and TV shows have further reinforced people’s aversion and alienation towards those with tattoos. Characters in Hong Kong films adorned with tattoos and members of Japanese gangs with intricate body art have contributed to associating tattoos with specific identities and affiliations.
In fact, tattoos have been revered by numerous ethnic groups since ancient times, carrying rich political and religious connotations that trace back to antiquity. In Egypt, mummies preserved in pyramids for over four thousand years bear distinct markings. Historians speculate that these markings were used to denote social classes and specific professions. In China, the history of tattooing can be traced back to at least the Spring and Autumn period. One form involved using facial tattoos as a punishment for criminal behavior, while the other stemmed from religious beliefs in totem worship. The “Zuo Zhuan” describes the land of Wu: “They cut their hair short, tattoo their bodies, and decorate themselves naked. Is this not a kind of ritual?”
